Rules & Regulations

  • In most cases, planting should be done only on the grave side of the headstone. The back side of the headstone is the end of the lot or lots. The planting area must be contiguous with the headstone and not overgrow the sides of the lot. This area is not to exceed 18-inch depth from the headstone. Planting is not allowed anywhere else on the lot, including footstones.

  • Planting area should remain flat and at ground level. Mounding up dirt or mulch to cover the base of the headstone can cause great damage to its foundation underneath.

  • The person planting the area is responsible for weeding and taking care of the area. If weeds or hitchhikers become unsightly, all plantings will be removed. The cemetery staff will mow and trim up to the monument and planting area only.

  • Planting areas can be filled with natural, bark mulch and potted or planted flowers only.  Stones, gravel, or artificial mulch are not allowed.

  • Borders, fences, walls, bricks, etc. are not allowed. They prohibit adequate maintenance.

  • Planting areas, headstones, and their base must remain clear of all objects. This includes but is not limited to the following: rocks, shells, coins, toys, plastic, glass, ceramics, pottery, vases, figurines, lights, lamps, windmills, windchimes, and photograph holders. If broken, they become dangerous projectiles during ground maintenance.

  • Artificial flowers, Christmas logs and wreaths are considered Seasonal Decorations only and can be placed starting October 15th and must be removed by April 15th. Staff will remove and dispose of items remaining after April 15th.

  • ROSES OR ANY PLANTS WITH THORNS ARE NOT ALLOWED AND WILL BE PROMPTLY REMOVED WITHOUT FURTHER NOTICE.

  • Balloons are not allowed. They get stuck in the trees and are there for years.

  • Any flags other than the United States flag are not allowed.

  • Loose flower bouquets are not allowed. They blow around the cemetery.

  • The planting of any trees or shrubs is not allowed. Trees or shrubs that are planted will be removed by staff without notice and a fee will be assessed against the lot for labor and equipment.

  • The harvesting of any flower (namely hydrangeas) or plant is forbidden without the permission of the cemetery.

  • Drinking alcohol, leaving bottles or other containers full or empty is not allowed.

  • Dogs and other pets are not allowed anywhere in the cemetery. Animal urine kills grass, plants, and stains memorials.

  • Speed limit in the cemetery is 10 MPH.

  • Before you purchase anything or place anything on the lot and have questions, please contact the cemetery for guidance. Call 413-568-7026 or stop in at our office at 140 West Silver Street, which is across from the cemetery’s main gate.
